Lesson 08 · Python

Object-Oriented Design: Composition, Dataclasses & Properties

Cut class boilerplate with @dataclass, lock values with frozen=True, build bigger objects by composing smaller ones, and guard state with @property - the everyday OOP toolkit.

Prerequisites: Object-Oriented Design: Inheritance, ABCs & Protocols

Learning objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Write dataclasses with field defaults and the auto-generated __init__, __repr__ and __eq__
  • Choose frozen dataclasses for value objects and explain what freezing prevents
  • Compose classes from other classes and delegate work to the parts
  • Enforce rules with @property getters and validating setters
  • Decide between composition and inheritance honestly
